A Short History of Tukarica Lodge

Tukarica Lodge 266 Flap S-1

In-Mut-Too-Yah-Lat-Lat Lodge was originally chartered June 20, 1944 as the Thunder City Lodge to the Oregon Idaho Council (later the Ore Ida Council) with headquarters in Nampa, Idaho.  The lodge totem was the Thunderbird or Thunder Eagle.  It was inactive from 1950 until 1953, when it recharted with six (4 ordeal and 2 brotherhood) members. It added 75 new members in 1955; adding an additional 44 members the next year. It changed its name in 1959 to In-Mut-Too-Yah-Lat-Lat, the Nez Perce name for Chief Joseph and literally translates as Thunder coming up over the land from the water.

Lemonti Lemooto Lodge 365 was chartered August 15, 1947 to the Mountain View Council, headquartered in Boise, Idaho.  Its totem was Mountain Ram. It was inactive from January 1953 until May 11, 1956, when its charter was reactivated by twelve ordeal members. Eighteen months later, it rechartered with 35 ordeal, 27 brotherhood and 3 vigil members.

The two councils merged in 1967-68 to form the current Ore-Ida Council with headquarters in Boise, Idaho.  The merger became official on January 1, 1968.  With the council merger, the two lodges also merged.  The lodge retained the Lodge number 266 from In-Mut-Too-Yah-Lat-Lat, changing the name of the lodge to Tukarica Lodge.

The neckerchief pictured below is from the 1967 Ore Ida Council, just prior to the merger in 1968. The camp is listed as Camp Tukadeka, which translates from the Shoshoni as "mountain sheep eater." It is believed that Tukarica Lodge took a variation of this camp name at merger. Anyone with information is asked to contact the lodge.

In 1971, Tukarica Lodge was one of the first lodges to be awarded the E. Urner Goodman Camping Award. This was the first year for the award. In 2003 the Lodge was awarded the National OA Service Award.
