What is National Youth Leadership Training? |
|
Every Scout unit should have trained
adult and youth leaders for efficient and optimum youth development.
Nothing is more essential in “delivering the promise” and meeting the
mission of the Boy Scouts of America. National Youth Leadership Training
(NYLT) is an opportunity for all junior leaders in the Scout troop, Varsity
team, or Venture crew to learn how to be effective leaders, not just in
their units, but in every aspect of life. These leadership skills are
learned using the patrol method and by participating as members of the NYLT
troop. NYLT training mirrors the adult Wood Badge program. |
| |
|
The NYLT course is for all
registered Scouts 13 through 18 years old who have reached the rank of 1st
Class and have at least one long-term camping activity. They must also have
the recommendation and approval of their adult leader. The course is
presented as a week-long encampment at the lower training area at Camp
Morrison on the east side of Payette Lake, 3 miles east of McCall, Idaho.
The course begins promptly Monday morning and ends Saturday afternoon after
a week of experiencing leadership skill in action. There is fun for all
with a generous portion of Scouting games and Scouting skills.
The NYLT program is presented by
Council approved youth leaders under adult supervision. It is designed to
be the model of a boy-run troop. The adults perform administrative services
and ensure all guidelines are met including health and safety. The
Scoutmaster is responsible, with the help of his youth staff, for two
lessons. All other learning activities are taught or facilitated by trained
and dedicated youth. They teach from a professionally designed NYLT
syllabus that insures a standard of excellence in all courses nationwide.
To insure nationwide recognition, all previous names for the Council junior
leadership course (Baden-Powell) have been dropped and it will now be
referred to simply as National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT). The course
incorporates eleven specific competencies of leadership and emphasizes the
stages of team development based on the principles described in the works of
Bruce Tuckman (i.e., forming, storming, norming, and performing). |
